Rajesh N. Sharan

Rajesh N. Sharan is a professor at the department of biochemistry and the director of the Design Innovation Centre at North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong, India. He earned his doctoral degree at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, in 1983) and did his postdoctoral research at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, Forschungszentrum (FZ) in Julich, Germany, and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany. He has been a visiting professor at FZ Julich and an invited professor at the department of radiation biology and human genetics at Osaka University in Japan.

He served as president of the Indian Society for Radiation Biology from 2000 to 2004 and has been a founding council member of the Asian Association of Radiation Research in Japan since 2007. He is also a life member of several national and international professional societies. Currently, he is a member of an international CRP to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria (2017–2021).

He is actively engaged in research in the domain of cancer and radiation molecular biology with a special interest in molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis of betel (areca) nut, radiation-induced DNA damage, and biomarker discovery for cancer and radiation damage assessment for their clinical applications with keen interest in the field of tobacco-related human cancer and harm reduction in India.

About one and a half-dozen students have earned their doctorate under his supervision. He holds and has applied for several patents. He has more than 105 research publications in international and national journals and books of repute to his credit. He has authored one text book (adaptation) and edited six books. He is an associate (handling) editor of the Journal of Radiation Research (Japan).
